Grey-necked Picathartes (Picathartes oreas) is one of only two members of the Picathartidae, a passerine family endemic to the equatorial tropical forest of Central and Western Africa. With a global population estimated <10,000 individuals in the wild, it is arguably one of the most threatened birds in the tropical Lower Guinea forest of Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Cameroon. Rockfowls are interior forest species that breed in cup-shaped mud nests usually attached to rock overhangs, rock crevices or caves within closed-canopy forests. Our main aim is to monitor the conservation status of rockfowl in the forests of southern Nigeria by evaluating population change and human related factors that could impact on population growth. Given the status of rockfowl as a landscape species, we goal is to provide managers with information that improves habitat for rockfowl as well as maintain the integrity of the Cross River forest.
